Paid Psychology Internship Credit for your Work at Chariton Valley Association

               Human Services and Psychology have a lot in common.  If you are a Truman State University student, and an employee at Chariton Valley Association, you can apply to earn internship credit towards your psychology degree.  The internship takes advantage of your experience working with people, and provides structured opportunities for learning and reflection.

               If you are interested in applying for internship credit, the first steps is to identify a TSU psychology faculty supervisor and apply for an Direct Support Professional position at Chariton Valley. The supervisor can help guide you through the rest of the process.  Any full-time Truman psychology faculty member can be an internship supervisor. You can also contact the TSU Department Chair of Psychology Robert Tigner, PhD at for more information about the psychology internship and working at Chariton Valley. 

The following information gives detailed requirements of the internship, and comes directly from the TSU internship packet:

Before you are eligible for a Psychology internship, you must:

  • Be a Junior or Senior (60 or more earned credit hours)
  • Have a Truman GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Choose either 5, 10, or 15 credits for your internship
    • 15 credit internships are only for full Fall/Spring semesters
      • (You can earn up to 15 credits total, so if you work for Chariton Valley for a full year, you could earn 5 credits each Summer, Fall, and Spring, to total 15).
    • Arrange with a department faculty member to serve as your Truman supervisor
    • Identify a location for your internship (you would identify Chariton Valley)
    • Identify someone at your internship site to be your On-Site Supervisor
    • Obtain a letter/email from your Truman Supervisor describing assignments to be evaluated & graded
    • Obtain a letter/email from the On-Site Supervisor outlining your expected duties
    • Complete a Psychology Internship Application (available at t
    • Obtain all approval signatures on the Application prior to posted deadlines
    • Enroll in PSYC471 and PSYC472 prior to posted deadlines

During your Internship, you must:

  • Conduct 40 hours of work for each credit hour you earn (PSYC471 & 472 hours combined)
    • 5 credit hours = 200 hours; 10 credit hours = 400 hours; 15 credit hours = 600 hours
  • Represent Truman well by being punctual, courteous, and professional at all times
  • Complete a written assignment each week to submit to your Truman supervisor
    • The details of this assignment should be worked out in advance with your Truman supervisor
  • Meet with your On-Site supervisor for a structured evaluation once every 5 weeks
    • 1 evaluation for a 5-week internship; 2 for 10-week internships; 3  for 15-weeks
    • A copy of this completed evaluation must be forwarded to your Truman supervisor

Following your Internship, you must:

  • Complete a final written assignment at the conclusion of your internship
    • The details of this assignment should be worked out in advance with your Truman supervisor
  • Complete the Intern Evaluation Form
  • Meet with your Truman supervisor to discuss your experience
  • OPTIONAL: Accept an invitation to speak to other students about your internship experience

Below is a brief description of the Direct Support Professional position at Chariton Valley, and the benefits offered during your paid internship:

Chariton Valley Association is seeking part-time and full-time Direct Support Professional staff for all shifts including nights and weekends. Direct Support Professionals (DSP) assist individuals with disabilities by providing a range of services including community integration, self-help skills, some general nursing care, and overall daily living. Employees will receive paid training and certification in medication administration, CPR, First Aid, and more. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking field experience in health care, mental health human services or the non-profit sector. Qualified candidates will be at least 18 years of age or older, posses a high school diploma or GED, be able to physically pull, push or lift 15-20 pounds on a daily basis and have a strong interest in helping others succeed and a caring disposition.
